Oberlin

Our final conference games of the season (and final home games) were against Oberlin. These games were very important because they would play into our fate of making it into the NCAC tournament. The games were set to be played on Saturday, but due to bad weather they were pushed to Sunday.

Playing on Sunday, we won both games. This allowed our team to solidify second place in the conference. This means we earned our way into the NCAC tournament!!

Since these were the final home games, this was also our time to honor the Seniors! Marissa, Gwen, Lauren, and Rachel have put in four years of hard work into our program. They have also contributed to this team to help us have the winning-est season in Wooster softball history.

Before the game all of the underclassmen met at the field and decorated the dugout and field to help honor them. We also put pictures of them all around and had gifts for them. This was a great way to help honor them, but the best was getting the W's on the day and making our way into the tournament conference and softball history.

Final Week in Biology

Since I am a biology major, I thought I would share some of the exciting work that I have been doing in my Animal Behavior class. Almost every biology course has a lab that goes along with it that lasts from 1-3:50 one day a week. Since I am in an Animal Behavior lab, most of the labs we completed consisted of observing animals and their behavior to find what might be influencing their behavior.

Instead of giving us a final exam, my professor chose to give us a final project. She had a choose an animal (that could easily be maintained in the lab) and we had to research that animal and devise an experiment that future labs could perform. Originally I chose to work with butterflies, but after receiving them from a distributor in Florida, they didn't live very long. After talking with my professor, she suggested that I would with wolf spiders. These spiders are known for females cannibalizing males after mating and another student in my class was observing this behavior. My professor thought it would be interesting to have me observe it from the males point of view. Other studies conducted suggest that males can sense when a female is hungry and is less likely to mate with her in order to save his own life.

I am not a huge fan of spiders (or a fan at all, to be honest) so I wasn't sure how this was going to go. Yesterday was the first day that I worked with them and it went pretty well. I don't actually have to touch the spiders and they are rather small, so that definitely helps. There was a clear difference in the males behavior when he was exposed to a hungry female and a female that had been fed. On Tuesday I will be completing some more trials and then presenting this lab to my classmates on Wednesday.

I think this was a great idea to really become engaged in the class and it is nice that there is one less final that I will have to study for! Even though I plan on going into healthcare, this was an interesting class to learn more about the behavior of animals.

I.S. Symposium

Today is a very exciting day at the College.. I.S. Symposium! Each year on a Friday in April, all of the classes on campus are cancelled so that students and faculty can engage in the I.S. topics that seniors have spent their whole year working on.

Most seniors create posters about their topic and are designated an area and a time slot to present their posters and answer any questions that spectators might have. As underclassmen, this is a great opportunity to be involved in I.S. It gives students the opportunity to see what topics other people have worked on and a chance to generate ideas for their own I.S.

For the most part, I.S. Symposium is pretty relaxed and gives students the opportunity to not only look at posters and listen to talks, but to catch up on work of their own! Some professors will require students to complete a quick write-up on one of the posters so that they know students are engaging themselves.

Today after observing some of these topics, I will be working on homework and try to get ahead on my assignments for next week! This weekend is going to be very busy and with the last week of classes next week, finals aren't too far away. On Monday I have a biology quiz and my last Spanish exam. Then on Tuesday I have a presentation in Spanish and I have some lab work that needs finished. Wednesday I will be presenting about my lab topic (I will elaborate more later) during my lab period in the afternoon. After this, my week will be more relaxed and I will begin to focus on studying for my exams. What a busy week it will be!

OWU

On Wednesday we hosted Ohio Wesleyan for our Strike Out Cancer games. Going in with a goal of a sweep, we had high expectations for the game. The first game was a nail biter and everyone was excited in the dugout (and nervous!). The game went into eight innings and offensively there were a lot of contributors at the plate to seal the win.

After winning the first game, we knew we had to come out with the same intensity in the second game in order to be successful. This time we were able to win the game in 7 innings with a 3-0 score. These were really big wins and it was great to have a team effort.

As of now, we are ranked second in the conference and on our way to reach one of our goals of the season: making it to the NCAC tournament. Our last conference games are tomorrow against Oberlin and it is essential that we play our game. Coach always tells us "Control what you can control. We have to play our game. The only thing that changes everyday is the opponent we are facing." Saturday is also our last home game, so it will be Senior Day. I can't believe the end of the season is almost here already and the seniors will be graduating.. After the games the parents will be putting their resources together and hosting a cook-out/dinner for all of us.

It's a great day to be a Scot!

Academic Update

Since season is in full swing as well as academics, I haven't been blogging as frequently. It can be tough to maintain both academics and stay on top of your softball game, but we all make it work. I am actually more productive during season since my time is limited. I do not particularly like studying on the bus and I definitely cannot read on the bus, so I always try to get ahead academically so when we have away games I do not fall behind or have to stay up late.

The beginning of our season was filled with away games, but now that we have reached the home game stretch, it has been a lot easier to complete work before and after games. We gain time because we are not traveling on the bus. It is also nice because we have the ability to eat in Lowry as a team after the games (and we usually can't get there soon enough!).

Last week was pretty busy for me since I had my final biology exam and a written homework assignment for my religion class. We also had games on Tuesday and Thursday, which are usually my work days since I have class all morning on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I had a few early mornings, but I was able to get all of my work done in a timely fashion before the games. This always helps to relieve stress!

This week isn't quite as busy. We have a game on Wednesday and Saturday, so softball won't interfere with my academics and I don't have a lot of assignments due. Next week, however, I have two presentations due (biology and Spanish) so I should start working on those now. Only two more weeks left of the semester before finals! The end of the semester always comes so fast, especially with softball season. But I am always anticipating summer and, hopefully, warm weather!!

OWU--Strike Out Cancer

Some quick promotional work--

On Wednesday we will continue our conference play against Ohio Wesleyan. This is not only a big game because of the conference play, but this is also out Strike Out Cancer game. Each each we choose a special cause that is cancer related that we want to help raise money for. Last year we helped to support a local little boy, Mason, that had been diagnosed.

This year we are supporting Lung Cancer Research. One of the girls on our team has had experience with this in her family and we thought it would be a great focus for this years game! Before we went to Florida the team was split into a few different groups. These groups were then given a list of businesses around the Wooster area and we went out to see if these businesses would like to donate or help us raise money. Many of them made contributions that we can raffle off at the game, while others made flat donations. Each year every member of the team also receives ten envelopes that we address to our family members to tell them more about the game and ask if they would like to donate as well.

This year we have had a lot of success with fundraising for this great cause and we are really looking forward to playing! If you can make it, we would love to see you at the game!

Telescope

Even though the softball field is on the Northern edge of campus, many students still venture up to the field. Sometimes when we are practicing, the Ultimate Frisbee team will be practicing at the bottom of the hill or some students will be having a picnic or tossing a ball around.

Since our field is not closed off, people have the opportunity to venture onto it and sometimes leave some belongings behind. One day when we went to practice we saw a white thing on the roof of the shed where we keep all of the field maintenance equipment. At the end of practice we went to check it out and realized it was a telescope! After it remained there for about a week, Marissa decided that she wanted to actually use it. So I thought it would be a good idea to take a picture and share it with you.

Here is Marissa showing off the telescope after practice! It will be interesting to see if it actually works and if she can see anything cool!

Wednesday 4/18

On Wednesday 4/18 we had a slightly shorter and altered practice since we are in the middle of our season. Since we were playing games pretty close together that week, the practices were not very intense because we didn't want to wear ourselves out before the games.

We went through a drill that incorporated hitting, fielding, and a teamwork aspect. After this coach told us we were going to do something special and made us all sit in the bleachers. She passed around a cup that had pipe cleaners in it. We all had to pick a pipe cleaner. She then passed the cup back around and each of us had to pick a piece of paper out of the bottom. On the piece of paper was one of our teammate's names. We had a few minutes and each one of us had to think of one word that described that person and what they mean to the team. This proved to be challenging because we could all think of so many descriptions, but couldn't narrow it down to one word. After a few minutes we all went around and said the word that described our person. The rest of the team would then try to guess which member of the team it described. As we continued to name the importance of our teammates, each person would connect their pipe cleaners in a circle to the previous one. When the last person went, they used their pipe cleaner to connect the two ends and make full circle.

This is a picture of Marissa, one of our seniors, wearing the pipe cleaner necklace. It was a really great activity to show the importance of everyone on the team, no matter what their role.

After we were done with this activity, a Dominos delivery man brought us pizza and pop to the field! Since the college had recently completed the Relay for Life, we were running a promotion with Dominos where the proceeds gained from anyone ordering a pizza at the college would go to the cancer foundation. This was a great way to support a campus organization and enjoy a team dinner at the field.

Baldwin-Wallace

After playing two very cold games at Kenyon, we were schedule to play Baldwin Wallace on Monday (4/23). Coach checked the forecast on the bus ride back from Kenyon and cancelled the game when it was only supposed to be 34 degrees. While we definitely wanted to get these games in, it was nice that coach gave us the day off so that we could not only rest, but we could catch up on our work! Our next game is on Wednesday against OWU!

Kenyon Day 2

Traveling back to Kenyon on Sunday gave every one a sense of deja vu. This time it was still very cold, but luckily it wasn't raining.

The first game went into 9 innings, with both teams scoring throughout all nine. In the end we were able to pull out the win with a 7-5 score.

Luckily the second game didn't go into 9 innings and we were able to win 7-6. We went into the seventh inning with a 4-3 score. We knew that we didn't want to go into the bottom of the 7th inning and just be up by one run, so our offense worked to put together 3 more runs. This gave us a comfortable 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Kenyon was ready for the challenge and was able to score 3 more runs to make the score 7-6 before the end of the game.

We finally got the sweep we were looking for. On the season our record is now 21-11. This is Wooster's winningest season so far! The record was 20 wins, which three teams before ours was able to reach. This is an exciting time to be a Scot and we hope to continue breaking records this year!

Kenyon Day 1

Where to begin with Kenyon.. On Saturday the bus left at 9:30 fo the hour long drive to Kenyon. This trip is on hilly roads and tends to make some feel a little bus sick. So coach made sure that we left early enough that we would have time to stop at their athletic complex and use the bathroom and collect ourselves before game time. When we arrived at Kenyon, it was raining. Not only was it raining, but it was also windy and pretty cold. After unloading all of the equipment off of the bus, we set up our hitting stations and completed the warm-up. It was sprinkling through all of this, but as we finished the hitting stations, the wind really picked up. Our team sat in the dugout to wait it out a little while and the Kenyon team tarped the field since it wouldn't be able to handle all of the water. After about ten minutes coach told us that we could wait on the bus until they began to detarp the field (the games were also going to be pushed back a little while).

At 1:00, which was the anticipated detarping time, the game was called since the forecast called for rain until 4:00 p.m. This meant that we had to gather all of our equipment and load it back onto the bus and we would have to travel to Kenyon again on Sunday to make up the games. The nice thing about this trip was the Jenn's Aunt and Uncle actually live very close to the field and they decided to make lunch for us. So after the game was called we traveled to their house and ate a DELICIOUS lunch. It was nice to spend time together in a warm house. We didn't get back to campus until around 4:00 p.m. Since we were playing the next day, it was important that we work on some of our homework since we wouldn't have all day on Sunday.

Saturday night some of the girls on the team decided to go out to dinner and see the movie "Think Like A Man." I was not able to go, but from what I heard they had a great time and the movie was really funny.

Otterbein

Our games on Thursday (4/19) were home against Otterbein. Otterbein definitely had a lot of speed in the base paths and would prove to be good competition.

The first game we were able to win 3-1. Through the combination of hits and smart base running we were able to score these runs, while holding Otterbein to just one run.

After a W in game one, we were working for the sweep. In the fourth we were able to score a run on a Cardinal error and the score was 1-0. Later in the sixth, the Cardinals were able to get one base and score 3 runs. After this we were not able to score again and dropped the game 3-1. After this loss, we were focused on traveling to Kenyon to continue conference play!

-Danielle

Denison

Next we hosted Denison. In order to reach one of our goals of making into the NCAC tournament, it is very important that we continue winning. Going into these games, it is important not only to compete, but to win.

The two games against Denison were very competitive and were a good showing for our team. The first game was very close, but we dropped it 7-6. In the beginning of the game, a Denison player hit a homerun with 2 other girls on base to make the score 3-0. Gina, our pitcher, later hit a homerun with two of our runners on base to tie the game at 3-3. Later in the game, another Denison player hit a 2 run homerun to make the score 6-3. After working to get on base and stringing some hits together, our team worked back to score 3 runs. The score was 6-6 until Denison was able to score on an error in the 6th inning. While last year the games against Denison proved to be challenging, we were definitely up for it this year! And after the loss we were ready to come back and take the second game.

Feeding off of the energy from the first game, we were able to win the second game 3-0. Lauren was able to smash a homerun in this game and we lead through the whole game before sealing the win in the 7th inning. On the season we have been .500 while playing in Ohio. We host Otterbein on Thursday and hope to prepare ourselves Kenyon on Saturday. Our goal is to get the sweeps for the rest of our conference play so that we can compete in the NCAC tournament!

-Danielle

DePauw

We hosted DePauw on April 14th. It was really important that we got this game in because DePauw was leaving on Friday night for the grueling 6 hour trip. The forecast was calling for rain on Saturday and we wouldn't be able to make the games up on Sunday because DePauw was scheduled to play Denison.

Coach texted us later Friday night and said the games would be moved up to 10 a.m. so that we could definitely get them in since the rain was supposed to come in the afternoon. In the morning everyone met for team breakfast and then headed over to the field. We also wanted to make sure we warmed up earlier enough because DePauw wanted to use our batting cages before we started.

We made it through the first game without any rain and won 3-1. This was an especially exciting game because DePauw had a great outlook for this season and was even ranked 14th. Carly, a freshman on the team, hit a homerun in order to give us the lead before finishing the game. Everyone was pumped after this game.

The second game didn't come so easily. The game was scoreless and then the rain really picked up. Since we were in the field, this proved to be difficult not only for the pitcher, but for fielding and even throwing the ball. The Tigers were able to score two runs off of errors and the score was then 3-0. When we finally got three outs and were up to bat, the umpires decided to call the game until it stopped raining. We quickly had to change out of our cleats and into tennis shoes or rain boots and pull the tarp onto the field. Right after we finished tarping, we hadn't even put the tarp down it, the rain subsided. This meant that we had to remove the tarp we just pulled onto the field. So, within 10 minutes the field was tarped and detarped. The game continued and DePauw won 6-0. This game proved to be difficult to play in the rain. And if I had to choose, softball would be the last sport that I would play in the rain. It is amazing how a little bit of water can really change your grip on the ball.

-Danielle

Wittenberg

This year we traveled to Wittenberg for the big rival game! We rode on the bus that didn't have a bathroom, so luckily the bus driver stopped at a rest area before we arrived. It was a chilly day so we made sure we layered up and did a little extra running to warm up.

The first game Witt won 3-0. We were a little slow coming around with the bats and didn't string any hits together to score. We knew that we really shouldn't have lost this game so everyone was fired up for the second game.

We won the second game 6-3. The team really came together and added some hits in order to score early in the first inning. This always helps to keep the play more relaxed when we are on the field, and the pitchers don't mind that at all.

Even though we split on the day, it was great to end with a win against Wooster's big rivals! We stopped for Subway on the way home and even saw the mom of one of Wooster's volleyball players! What a small world. These games were also good preparation for DePauw, who we hosted Saturday!

Hiram

Continuing on the away game streak, we traveled to Hiram for more conference play. After the tough losses to Allegheny the team was definitely ready to get some W's. We knew this would be a tough game and that it was important to arrive ready to play.

The first game was one of the most exciting! We went into the 9th inning with a 3-3 score and were trying to make something happen. After Demi started the inning off with a triple, Hiram loaded the bases by walking the next two consecutive batters. This is where our hitting took off and capitalized on a few errors. We were able to score 7 runs before going into the bottom of the 9th. Hiram came back strong with a few hits and recorded 3 runs before the inning ended. The 10-6 win felt great!

After an exciting first game it was important to come ready to play again in the second. It was obvious that both teams were going to hit the ball and that we would have to play a great defensive game as well. We went into the seventh inning with a 2-0 score and allowed the Terriers to score one run. The game ended with a 2-1 score. It was great to get the sweep!

Since it was Easter weekend, coach gave us Saturday off and many of us were able to go home to spend some time with our families. Personally, it was great to see my family and have a day off to recuperate. For those who didn't go home for the weekend, I know they still had a great weekend!

-Danielle

Allegheny

The Marietta games were great to help prepare our team for conference play. Our first conference game was at Allegheny, which is quite the drive from Wooster (almost three hours!). This means that there is ample time to work on some homework during the bus ride and since it was a Tuesday, many of us did just that.

As far as the semester goes, it was really hard to get back into the swing of doing homework everyday (especially after only playing softball and hanging out in Florida for almost two weeks!). Usually after the first week back it is pretty easy to settle back into a routine.

After finally arriving at Allegheny, conference play began. The first game was rough in the beginning. While we had runners on base and opportunities, getting the runners in proved to be a little more challenging. One of the the players on the other team hit two homeruns to give them a 5-0 lead going into the 7th. Things finally came together in this inning and we rallied to score 3 runs. The inning ended and the 5-3 loss was disappointing.

After the first game and finally getting the bats moving, we were ready to play again. The second game was much closer and went into 9 innings. Unfortunately, after walking the player that previously hit three homeruns, she scored on an error and ended the game with a 2-1 score. This was definitely disappointing and a hard way to lose, but it was important to get back to work the next day in practice and prepare for Hiram on Friday.

Ohio Games

So we made it back to Ohio and we are now full swing into the season! It was nice to spend a few days on campus for the remainder of spring break, but getting back into the swing of classes was a bit rough.

The beginning of our schedule in Ohio mostly consists of away games. The first games back were at Marietta College. Everyone was excited to start playing again, but it can be tough to manage classes and games. Almost all of our games throughout the week are at 3:00 and 5:00. So for away games that consist of a substantial drive, this could mean missing a few classes.

Marietta isn't too far away, so the bus left at 11:30. I had to miss half of my American Religious Communities class for the day. While the professors know that we are all students first and try to uphold this in class, they are usually very understanding if you request to leave class early. As long as you notify them in advance they are willing to work with your schedule and, if necessary, make alternate arrangements for exams and other assignments.

I was sick and not able to play when we traveled to Marietta, but I still watched the games from the stands. It is amazing how much the perspective changes from not only playing to cheering in the dugout, but as a spectator outside the field! The first game didn't go as well as we would have liked it to. The other team had some big hits (and home runs) that drove in runs and the game ended in 5 innings with a 12-5 score.

After this loss the team really came together to play in the second game and it was really exciting to watch! There was a combined effort at the plate and defensively we were able to hold Marietta in order to get the win with a 4-3 score!

Even though we lost the first game, it is always nice to end with a win! After games we always stop to get something to eat, usually Subway or Wendys.. it depends on what is around. So we loaded up the bus, stopped at Subway to get dinner, and made our way back to campus!

Leaving Florida and coming back to Ohio..

Our last day in Florida was Thursday. That morning we took time to pack up all of our belongings and clean up the houses. We had to meet coach at her house after 10 and then we had the afternoon to ourselves. Some of the girls went putt putting at the Pirates Cove and they had a great time! The majority of us went to the Scots baseball game for a little while since they were in Florida as well.

After watching the game we all met the coaches at Olive Garden for our final team dinner in Florida. Everyone took this opportunity to eat well since our flight wouldn't land in Ohio until almost 10 p.m. We went to the airport and spent some time hanging out until the 2.5 hour flight. While I would take a 2.5 hour flight over driving any day, this flight seemed to be especially long and pretty boring.

After we landed in Ohio, the team took a bus back to Wooster. In the past we have been able to go home for the last few days of spring break, but this year everyone went back to campus for practice on Friday and Saturday. It was really nice to have some extra time together and to have the campus practically to ourselves.

I would have to say that the biggest shock when coming back to Ohio would be the weather change. When the team was in Florida, Ohio was experiencing unseasonably warm weather with temperatures reaching into the 80s (very close to the same temperature in Florida). After we came back the temperature has, of course, dropped and it has rained. Today at practice it was 47 degrees, which seems very cold after playing in the hot sun.

Our first game in Ohio is on Wednesday at Marietta! This will probably be a tough game, but we are all looking forward to getting into the season!

Til next time,
Danielle

Mass. Dartmouth and Smith

To end the Florida trip, our last two games were against Mass. Dartmouth and Smith College. It was hard to believe that the trip was finally coming to an end, but it was evident that we had played 14 games by this point. I think it is safe to say that everyone was tired and the pitchers were very sore.

The first game was against Mass. Dartmouth and we jumped on them early and continued to score. We ended up winning this game 10-0 in 5 innings.

The second game was a little more challenging. We won the game 5-1, but the Smith players were very aggressive at the plate and put themselves in scoring position various times. Luckily, our defense stayed strong and the offense came along to pull out the win.

We reached our goal of going 4-0 for the final four games of the Spring Break trip. This leaves our record at 12-4, which is the best start we have had in the history of the Scots softball!

Hendrix and Olivet

For the final stretch of four games, our goal was to take all four. We hadn't been able to get the four game sweep yet so we were hoping to pull it off.

The first game we played Hendrix and won 3-0. After the loss to Amherst, it was really nice to come together as a team and pull together this win.

The second game was against Olivet. We won this game 4-2. These two wins sent us well on our way to achieving our 4-0 goal!

Lip Sync

Lip Sync went well and was absolutely hilarious! Basically it goes like this:

The coaches are the judges and the team is split into four different groups. Each group then chooses parts of various songs that they want to put together and create a dance to. After some preparation and planning, we all get together and put on a show! It is always hilarious to watch your teammates pretend to sing as they dance along to songs.

This year was we all waited until the day of lip sync to put everything together, but it turned out really well. Almost every genre of music was represented by the four groups. My group chose Disney songs and put them together. To give you a picture of how it went:

We started with "Hi Ho" from the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and used this to gather in front of the group and then went into the song "Just Around the River Bend" from Pocahontas. At this point Gwen was in the pool on the raft using an oar to move herself around. My group also used songs from The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and other Disney movies.

After all of the groups went, the coaches deliberated and announced the winners. My group came in second. There are always fun prizes to go along with Lip Sync. The winners get t-shirts, while usually the group in fourth place tend to find bananas, cans of soup, and ear plugs in their bags. Lip sync was so much fun. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with next year!

Team Dinner Out

Tonight was also the team dinner out. Each year we pick a restaurant and the team meets there for dinner. This year, Coach thought it would be funny to tell us that she took care of making the reservations. She also added that the reservations were at Wendy's! After continuing the joke, she sent us the address to meet her at. We ended up going to Outback Steakhouse for the steak dinner we all had been working towards!

While the wait to be seated seemed to be a bit lengthy, it was well worth the wait! It is an understatement to say that no one left the restaurant hungry. After a long day, everyone came back to the house to settle down and watch t.v. before bed. Tomorrow my house is hosting team dinner along with lip sync! It should be an exciting day. I will inform you more about lip sync tomorrow... it should be lots of fun and hilarious!

St. Olaf and Amherst

The first game against St. Olaf moved quickly and before we knew it, it was the eighth inning and no one had scored. Wooster was the away team and we put a runner at second to start the inning. With some good at-bats, we scored one run and held St. Olaf. While this game seemed very close, I felt very confident throughout it. The team was hitting the ball well, but some of the hits just weren't falling. Luckily everything worked out and we pulled out the win.

The second game against Amherst was a little rough. It was obvious that they were a good team and very aggressive at the plate during the first inning. We were able to hold them throughout the first innings and we evened scored a run. Then during the sixth inning, Amherst started hitting gaps and scoring more runs. This wasn't our best showing at the plate, but the team never gave up. An 8-1 loss isn't something we want to accept, but it will help to motivate us through the rest of the trip. Our goal is to take the last four games before we fly back to Ohio.

-Danielle

Wisconsin Lutheran and Worcester State

Saturday's games were filled with lots of excitement and all around good playing. The first game against Wisconsin Lutheran ended in 5 innings with a score of 10-0. We used the opportunity to jump on them early and continued to score throughout the game. In the beginning of the game, we had a minor mishap with one of our girls getting cleated. Six stitches later, she was back to watch the second game and cheer on the team. What a trooper!

I would have to say that the second game against Worcester State was one of our best. The team was aggressive at the plate and scored four runs right away. While we could have been down and given up, the team came together and everyone contributed at the plate to come right back. In the end, we won the game 7-6. This game really helped to show what our team is capable of this season; the sky is the limit!

Beach Day!

Friday was the designated beach day and everyone was looking forward to spending some quality time in the sand and ocean. Before we left for the afternoon, both houses had to finish the lift. We met at 9:30 and headed to Sanibel so we could spend the afternoon on the beach.

After finally finding a few parking spaces, we ended up at Bowman beach. The afternoon was spent doing various activities. Many of us played frisbee in the ocean, searched for shells on the beach, and just enjoyed playing in the sand and relaxing. It was a fun afternoon, but after three hours everyone was ready to head back.

On the drive back we stopped at Dairy Queen and got some ice cream. What a nice treat after spending the afternoon in the sun. We headed back to the houses and showered so we would be ready for dinner at Coach's by 6.

Dinner was a nice time to gather and catch up on the day off. We played euchre and explored the backyard, which had a banana tree and a dock right on the water. On the way home we had to stop and buy some aloe since everyone was burnt from the afternoon on the beach. Even though we put sunscreen on, the Florida sun is still very hot!

Day Five: MCLA and Polytechnic

Day Five and well on our way to the steak dinner if we can get two more wins.

The first game against MCLA was a short one. We beat them 10-0 in five innings. Everyone had a good day at the plate and more of the team was involved in this game with everyone earning an at bat. Since the game was finished so early and the team we were playing for the second game was still working on their first game, we had plenty of time to scout them.

We knew Polytechnic was going to be a great game from watching their first game. It went into extra innings with both teams scoring quite frequently. This worked to our advantage since this means they spent more time in the sun and that would hopefully tire them out some. It ended up being close with the final score being 2-1. We lost in 7 innings, but we definitely learned a lot in this game. We had some breakout hitters and going into the seventh we were down by two after a girl on the other team hit a homerun with a runner on first. At this point we could have given up, but the team rallied and scored a run with two outs.

Our team this year has a lot of potential. Even though we ended up falling short of the steak dinner, we learned that in situations when we are down, we can still fight our way back. Confidence at the plate was also found today, with big hits coming from all parts of the line-up. With a 5-3 record, we hope to keep building the wins and acquiring more skills that will help us in conference play once we get back to Ohio.

Day Four: St. Lawrence and Albright

Today we added two more wins to the record with a great day of softball.

After struggling with hitting the previous game, we really came out against St. Lawrence and beat them 8-1. It was great to develop such a lead and have a big win. That always helps the team moral.

The second game against Albright was much closer with the score 2-1. Ending the day with a sweep was awesome.

We also had made a deal with coach at team dinner that if we go 4-0 the next four games, she owes us a steak dinner. She agreed and also added that it would be a trip out. Food is always a good motivator and the wins sent us on our way towards achieving that goal.

That night my house went out to get ice cream at Cold Stone. What a treat! It is always fun to go on little outings together, especially to get some ice cream with the weather being so warm.

Day Off One

After earning a 2-2 record, the first day off was pretty relaxed. There is a lift that we all must complete with bands, but other than that the day is pretty much ours to do as we please. Since the team is divided into two separate houses, the activities can vary, but I am sure that this day was mostly spent hanging outside by the pool and working on our tans.

Since it is so hot outside we have to make sure to stay hydrated as well as not spend too much time in the sun. So, not only did we lay outside and swim in the pool, but we hung out inside as well. Our house had four bikes in the garage and a few of us went on a ride around the allotment. We also found a dart board in the entertainment center and started playing nightly games of darts.

The night was pretty relaxed as well. The other house cooked dinner for everyone and we all spent some quality team time together. The other house is fascinated with catching "geckos," which are really the lizards, and even created a habitat and kept one for the day. It was fun to hang out together for the evening. Once we got back to our house, we watched a movie that we rented (scary movies seem to be the popular choice!) and went to bed. Since we get up so early for our games (usually around 6), bedtime tends to fall before 10. This may not sound totally appealing, but I look forward to it now. Getting in a quality 8 hours of sleep is something that is usually hard to come by, especially when we are in season during school.

Day Two: New Jersey City and Richard Stockton

Day Two was rough.. especially compared to the first day. The dugout was filled with a little more tension and nervousness than the first. There were still high expectations for the day and the defense was strong, but the offense struggled. With everyone wanting to get a hit so badly, the hits seemed to elude us.

New Jersey City-- the score was 4-3 in 7 innings.
Richard Stockton--won 2-0 in 7 innings. The pitcher had a lot of movement and worked a rise ball into her sequences.

After having a rough day at the plate, a day off was good for everyone to recuperate and refocus.

Day One: Nichols and Finlandia

Everyone was so excited to start playing games and the first day was a great one! We started off the season with a 2-0 record beating both Nichols College and Finlandia. The dugout was not only filled with excitement, but with a lot of anticipation too.

The first game against Nichols, the score was 2-0. Gina pitched the first game and Lauren ended up hitting a home run. What an exciting game!

We beat Finlandia 2-1 in 7 innings. Jenn pitched very well and the team worked together to drive in two runs.

After starting the season off 2-0, everyone is excited to see how the trip will go.

Florida!

We are finally here!! Saturday morning the team met outside of the Scot Center at 6 a.m. to go to the airport. Luckily this was relatively close to our flight time and we were in Florida by 11 a.m.

We have four cars that are split between the team in order to get from our houses to the fields and anywhere in between. The houses are both really nice and have pools! While the water is still chilly, it is as warm as ever. After coming from the snow I definitely can't complain.

Everyone is excited to play on the dirt and start the season! Check back for updates on the games!

This is it! The finial week before we leave for the Sunshine State!!!  Walking to breakfast this morning my roommate's iphone reported the temperature to be 10 degrees. Phew, it really is a good thing we're getting out of here so soon. I already have my computer set to Fort Meyers weather, just for a little motivation, and heres what it said today

3/2/12

Wow, March is finally here! One more week and then spring break will be here and the team will be getting ready to fly to Florida. Everyone is excited to finally be playing in the dirt and warm weather.

As far as classes go, this is crunch time. There will be plenty of exams and the seniors are finishing their drafts of I.S. While this is one of the more stressful times, the end is also in sight. Soon enough the days will consist of softball games and sitting by the pool.

The weather has been phenomenal lately and we have been practicing outside more than ever before! Hopefully Mother Nature doesn't decide to make us pay for this later. While I don't mind the 60 degree weather, I don't want it to snow in April!

Now you can follow the softball team on twitter @CowSoftball! Get updates on games and learn fast facts!

Til next time..

2/27/12

This week of practice may get a little bit crazy with all of the schedule changes! We are supposed to have late practices all week, but if we can get any time outside that will be changing. Tonight we were able to practice on the turf from 6:30-8:30. Even though it was a little on the cold side (and I mean cold!), it was really nice to be able to take full field, bat against the pitchers, and work on different situations. We all got a lot out of this practice.

Later on this week we are hoping to be practicing on our own field! Right now we are just waiting for some of the water to dry up. This has been a warm winter and it is making for nice pre-season practice. Less than two weeks and we will be flying to Florida! Can't wait to play in the 80 degree weather instead of this 30 degree weather :)

Spring Break

I can't believe we only have two more weeks of practice untill Spring Break!!
This semester is flying by. This past week has been crazy.  Between all the rain, sun, snow, exams, practice, and lifting this week was hectic, but that is what Wooster is all about.
But anyway Spring Break is right around the corner and all I can think about is the sun and the softball!! Florida is the best two weeks of the year!

2/21/12

Welp, it snowed once again today! Luckily we weren't planning on practicing outside like the baseball team was. This week we have practice at 6 am, but luckily on Tuesday and Thursday we are just lifting so we can all meet at the gym at 4 pm. It is really nice in the Scot Center since they renovated the old weight room and there is now plenty of room for all of us to complete the lift. Tomorrow is our last 6 am since Friday we are hoping to practice outside on the turf! Let's just hope that it doesn't rain, or even worse, snow!

Things are really coming together as time goes by. Soon enough it will be Spring Break and we will be starting our season in Florida! I can't wait to see the sun and based on recent weather reports it has been around 80 degrees in Fort Myers. Today after we finished lifting we found out our lip sync groups. Lip sync is one of the fun team activities we do in Florida. The team is divided up into four groups and each groups puts together a song (usually a mash-up) and then choreographs a dance. One night when we are in Florida, we will have lip sync after team dinner. Last year it was so cool to see what everyone came up with and to watch different teammates break it down.

Well back to homework I go.. Only 2.5 more weeks til Spring Break!!

2/13/12

It snowed once again this weekend and has been pretty chilly. This week we will be practicing from 10 to midnight, which isn't the best practice time, but I guess it could always be worse. We have been able to take full field in Gault, which is part of the new addition in the Scot Center. The new cages have to be fixed before we can use them anymore, but soon they will be up and running!

This week is pretty busy academically. I have a spanish paper and lab report due on Wednesday and a paper for my religion class due on Friday. As long as I am productive, it shouldn't be too rough. Spring break is getting closer and closer though! I cannot wait to go to Florida and start playing in the dirt.

Large Group of Returning Starters Look to Lead Scots to NCAC Tourney

Rachel Frank
Rachel Frank had a career-year in 2011, and is one of four seniors on the roster this spring.
Following a respectable 16-win season which saw The College of Wooster lose 10 games by two runs or less, the Scots have reason to believe they can win more close games in 2012, as they return seven of their top-nine hitters and all three of their starting pitchers from a team that won three of its last four games a season ago.
"We want to get back to 2010 form," said 13th-year head coach Lori Schimmel, whose team won 20 games and broke several school records that year. "Last season (2011) was tough mentally, with all the close games, not to mention the large number of rain outs and rescheduling we had to do…but those experiences should help us this year. We're ready to bounce back, and we know what we have to do to get where we want to be."
Offensively, the Scots will be led by all-North Coast Athletic Conference picks Lauren Swinehart and Erica Villa, who provide a nice 1-2 punch near the top of the order.
"Lauren was healthy last year, and when she's healthy, she is capable of doing a lot of good things for us," said Schimmel. "We know that she can hit, and she's got a cannon for an arm, but she's the type of player who you could put anywhere out there and she could help your team."
Swinehart was voted second-team all-NCAC after leading the Scots in most statistical categories, including batting average (.324), hits (33), home runs (4), doubles (7), RBI (13), and runs scored (21). She also chipped in seven stolen bases and made some big plays in left field, and will likely be locked into the No. 3 hole yet again on Schimmel's lineup card.
Villa, who was an honorable mention pick on the all-conference team, batted .267 on the season, but that number increased to a team-leading .315 with runners on base. The left-handed hitter also scored 12 runs and stole eight bases, with the latter expected to increase this year, as Schimmel wants the team to be even more aggressive on the base paths.
"At the plate, Erica is a triple threat…she can take a full swing, slap, or drag," said Schimmel. "And as a base runner, she's not afraid to take off. She can beat you in a lot of ways."
Schimmel will welcome back several other veterans, including Rachel Frank, Danielle Grooms, and pitchers Jenn Horton and Gina Pirolozzi, who are also key contributors at the plate.
Frank, a three-year starter in the outfield, had her most productive season a year ago, hitting .272 with 11 runs scored. Grooms, who played substantially at both catcher and first base, also posted a .272 batting average, and showed power potential with six doubles and seven RBI.
Horton tied for the team-lead with 13 RBI, while Pirolozzi drew 18 walks and totaled six extra-base hits coming in the form of four doubles and two homers.
Other returnees competing for a spot in the lineup include seniors Gwen Davis and Marissa Stover, as well as sophomores Aundrea Atwell, Kasie Fagan, and Tiarra Patton.
The pitching staff has remained completely intact, with Horton and Pirolozzi expected to log the majority of the innings, but according to Schimmel, Allie Webb and Atwell could get more chances in the circle as well this year.
"We feel that we have four pitchers that can be effective," explained Schimmel. "Horton and Pirolozzi have been very solid for us these last two years, and I don't think we've necessarily seen them reach their full potential yet."
Horton, who has been an all-NCAC honorable mention in each of her first two seasons, went 7-10 last year, despite only allowing more than three earned runs on two occasions. She posted a 2.59 ERA and struck out 6.25 batters per game, which was the fifth-highest total in the league.
Pirolozzi had a solid year, going 4-6 with a 3.53 ERA, and striking out 52 batters in 75.1 innings. Webb posted a 2-2 record in eight appearances (six starts), while Atwell earned some pitching nods early in the season, but later carved out a niche as the starting third baseman.
The Scots will also welcome six incoming freshman to the team this spring, several of which are expected to push for playing time right away.
"With Denison, Hiram, and now DePauw joining the NCAC, there's no doubt that this is a very talented league," said Schimmel. "But we want to get into that group…that top-four, and make the conference tournament, because at that point anything can happen."

Work Study

So today a few of the softball girls worked at the indoor track meet here on campus. Most of the team has work-study jobs on campus, mainly in the athletic department. There are so many different opportunities for work study here in Woo and jobs are pretty easy to come by as long as you are flexible. In the fall, after move-in, you simply go to the employment office and fill out an application. Then you can send it to the different departments that you are interested in. Here is a picture of Jenn and I (Jenn is on the left) working the track meet and another of the new Scots Center (a bunch of tables and things were set up for the meet)!

2/3/12

This week has been pretty busy with the start of practice and classes. Since it has been so warm we have been outside on the turf everyday. Along with that we have been working inside. Plenty of stations in order to get our lift, hitting, and other drills in. Today we are fortunate enough to have the whole two hour practice on the turf!

Academically, today was pretty easy, but next week will be more of a challenge. I have a Spanish exam Tuesday and a bio exam on Friday. I am excited for Wednesday though since my bio lab will be taking a field trip to the Cleveland Zoo. It should be fun! And getting off of campus for a little while is never a bad thing.

This weekend will be filled with plenty of homework and studying, but I am also looking forward to having some fun with friends!

Outside again!

WOW! Can't help but be in a great mood today.  It's Friday, I'm done with classes, the sun is shining, and we get to practice outside today!! Life in WOO is good :)
Today's practice was bumped up to 2-4 p.m., there is nothing better than have an early practice time on a Friday so your weekend can start early! Everyone has certainly earned their rest after a very taxing but exciting first week of conditioning, work and practice.
Till next time

1/31/12

Some time you can't help but love winter in Ohio.  Today it was 45 degrees and sunny so we took advantage of the unusually warm weather and practiced outside.  If you have ever played ball before you understand when I say today was a great day! Nothing beats the feeling of the first time you field a ground ball outside. Who would've thought our second day of practice we would get to take full field?(on the football turf but still I'm certainly not complaining, beats running sprints in the gym any day!)
A new gym and a nice day in January? Could we really ask for anything more? I sure hope this is a sign for all the great things to come this season!

1/30/12

Well today is the day.. the first day of practice! Coach has a lot planned for today, including a long run and stations. I guess we will see how it goes. The rest of the week is supposed to be really nice so we will be spending some time outside practicing on the turf.

We are now in the third week of classes and the work is continuing to build! It is important to stay on top of it all so that it doesn't start to pile up. With that said, I am off to get some things done before practice at 6.

A Year in Picture

Wooster and Traveling Experiences

Hello Everybody!
I just got back from a meeting where Juniors had the chance to share about their study abroad experiences.  At Wooster about 35% of each graduating class have at least one off campus study experience during their time here.  It was so cool to hear about the different places and adventures everyone had.  I listened to several of my fellow Geology students share.  Some students took classes that applied to the Geology major, while others simply took interesting and fun classes the would never have the chance to take in the United States.  The great thing about Wooster is that your college experience is completely your own.  There are plenty of athletes that are double majors who still get to study abroad(and graduate in four years). For example Rachel Frank, the center fielder on our team, is a math and art major who went to Italy last year.  So if you want to do it all, Woo is the place for you!

Hey All--

Today we are wrapping up the Captain's practices with a softball day that will mainly consist of hitting. Tomorrow the team will be going to Superfit, a workout session that the College provides. Everyone has been working hard and has spent quite some time in the gym getting ready for practice next week. The first few weeks will be geared towards getting us into top shape and working on hitting and different situations. Coach has some exciting new ideas that she wants to implement this season and I can't wait to see how it all goes.

It has been pretty rainy the past few days, but since it is January and not snowing no one is really mad about it. Hopefully if the weather can stay relatively warm so we will be able to spend some time practicing outside.

The semester is starting to swing into full gear. I have two quizzes tomorrow, one in my biology class and one in my religion class. Tonight I will be busy studying for those. I am also taking a Spanish course and classic pilates. I am excited to see how this semester goes since I am taking so many different classes. These will help me meet all of the general course requirements that Wooster has. Just another part of a liberal arts education. When I came to college I wasn't really sure what that meant, but basically it means that in order to graduate you must complete courses in a variety of different disciplines. I am actually a big fan of it since it has shown me in various ways how everything is related and can apply to the real world.

Better get back to work

1/24/11

It is the end of January and 53 degrees outside right now! While it is so warm, it is also raining (but that is preferred over snow). The second week of classes has started and I hope that things start to pick up; last week seemed like it lasted for a month.

Friday night the softball team went out to have a nice dinner together. I was not able to go since I had to go home for a funeral, but from what I have heard everyone had fun! This is the last week of captain's practices before we start real practice next Monday. Before we know it, games will be starting. Oh, and only about six weeks until we go to Florida, the highlight of Spring semester!!

Between homework and softball practice I will also be filling out an application to Study Abroad in the fall! I am so excited and hope to travel to Ireland. Now I just have to write the essays. I will have no problem staying busy this week!

Hey

Hey!!
Just thought I would take some time on this Sunday afternoon to check in with everybody. We had our first big snowfall here in Wooster. Even though everything is covered in snow campus is still beautiful. Let's see, I had a very relaxing weekend, which was needed after the craziness of the first week back. On Friday the team went to Buffalo Wild Wings to celebrate one of our seniors 22nd birthday. It was a great was to bond over a good meal (and a nice break from cafeteria food). It was a really fun time and a great way for the older girls to get to know the younger ones outside of practice. On Saturday the Wooster Mens Basketball team defeated OWU with a last minute foul shot. It was an exciting game with a great turn out. Going to basketball games is a very popular activity for students, staff, and community members. It's always fun to cheer on the team plus they play some great ball.
Till next time!

First Week Of Class

Hi All,
I can't believe winter break is over and the first practice is only TWO WEEKS AWAY!!! These two weeks aren't lazy days though. Today we had a circuit workout with some extra cardio on the awesome new machines in the Scot Center.  Everyone has been lifting and running on their own throughout break to prepare for 30th.  Pitchers have been getting extra long throws in, so my arm is feeling a little sore.  Yesterday we threw the team some live at bats. Each girl had six at bats. It was a great workout for both the batters and pitchers.
More to come soon!

Scot Center and Library Opening

Tonight the library was open so that students, staff, and members of the community could see the renovated space. There are now more up-to-date tables and computers for students to use when working on projects. There are also more study rooms for students to work together on projects. I would have to say that my favorite addition is the technology in these rooms. The table has a hook-up to a tv screen so that the laptop screen can be displayed for everyone to see! There is also a coffee machine in the library now so students do not have to leave to caffeinate when studying.

The Scot Center also had a Grand Opening tonight and it is absolutely amazing! There are four basketball courts with an indoor track surrounding it. On these courts, bases and the mound are also etched in the floor so that we can have full field practice inside! The new batting cages are pretty cool too since we will no longer have to flip the net before and after using. Treadmills and ellipticals are AWESOME! They all have tv screens and an iPod hook-up, not to mention the renovated weight room. I can't get over all of the new machines and lifting stations. Working out should be more enjoyable now! I am excited to start practicing now. But words don't do enough justice to these new facilities, you will have to come check them out!

Classes start tomorrow so I better enjoy my last stress free and lazy night!

1/14/11

I can't believe it is January 14th already! I am getting all of my stuff ready to move back in today. It is exciting, but I don't know where the time has gone. My roommate is going to be thrilled when she sees all of the stuff I am bringing back, but quite a bit of it is to decorate our room with!

I also had to break out my swimming suits and sunscreen so I will have them for the softball trip to Florida! I am so excited; it should be a blast. Practice starts the end of January so I will be spending some quality time in the Scot Center preparing for it.

Speaking of the Scot Center, the new addition will have a grand opening tomorrow night (Sunday) at 8. The softball team is meeting so that we can all explore it together. This should be SO much nicer than the old workout room and there are even basketball courts and an indoor track! I can't wait to see it.

Wooster has also renovated the first floor of the library and made it a Collaborative Research Environment. There is now a cafe in the library and plenty of space for students to work together. It is an exciting time in Wooster and I can't wait to get back and check it all out! Although I am a little apprehensive about starting classes on Monday :)

1/6/11

Hey All--

It has been quite awhile since I have blogged and a lot has happened. The semester ended and finals went well. My four finals were spread out during the first two days of finals, so that made for some stressful times and cramming, but it was nice because I was finished and able to come home and spend time with my family.

Break has been awesome! I have spent a lot of time with my family and friends, as well as found different work outs so that I can be prepared for practice in January. I am excited to start another semester and see everyone in Woo, but it is nice to just veg out some days and not worry about studying.

At this point I am most looking forward to the annual softball trip to Florida! It isn't until March, but it will be here before we know it. I am excited to start playing and getting into the swing of things. I just hope that it isn't snowing in May since we have had very little snowfall so far.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

More to come later..
